WINTER PARK, Fla. – An 18-year-old riding a bicycle with no brakes lost control of his bike and was run over and killed by a fire truck in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Cullen Detamore, of Winter Park, was following the fire truck down Lakemont Avenue, right across from the Winter Park Hospital emergency room. The fire truck slowed down and turned right on to Greenwich Avenue with its turn signal flashing, according to investigators. Since Detamore could not stop quickly, witnesses said the teen tried to make a sharp right turn alongside the truck but lost control.

"He took the corner so fast, the tires slipped out from underneath the bike and he went right underneath the truck," said witness Gary Johnson.

The teen slid under the fire truck and was run over, according to FHP.

"The bike didn't have brakes. This guy is doing everything he can to accelerate past this truck turning in front of him," said Johnson. "He should have maybe just run right into it.

"Florida law requires brakes on all bicycles. Violators can receive a $15 citation.
