2 killed, 4 injured in head-on Lake County crash

FHP says investigation ongoing

ALTOONA, Fla. – Two drivers were killed and four passengers were injured Monday afternoon in a head-on crash in Lake County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

David Bookhardt, 63, of Tennessee, and Joseph Miller, 33, of Altoona, died in the crash, which was reported around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 19 and Ravenswood Road in Altoona.

The FHP said Miller was driving a 1999 Lincoln four-door southbound on S.R. 19 when his vehicle traveled into the northbound lanes for an unknown reason. The car struck a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Bookhardt, and both drivers died at the scene, troopers said.

A 36-year-old woman in the Lincoln was critically injured in the crash, and two children, ages 8 and 12, suffered minor injuries, the FHP said. All three were taken to area hospitals.

A 60-year-old woman who was a passenger in the pickup suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.

State Road 19 was shut down as authorities investigated the crash.
