The crash was reported about 1 p.m. on South Charles R. Beall Boulevard in DeBary.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call about a reckless Jeep Cherokee that was straying out of its lane and had struck a curb a couple of times. About five minutes later, the southbound Jeep crossed over the median into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with an oncoming car, deputies said.

The driver of the northbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. His name has not been released.

Kenneth Dawkins, an 89-year-old Deltona man who was driving the Jeep was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford in critical condition, deputies said. He died Friday night.

Charles R. Beall Boulevard was closed in both directions from Fort Florida Road to Barwick Road.

An investigation is continuing.
