LAKE ALFRED, Fla. – A 49-year-old Winter Haven man was killed and two others were injured early Monday in a nearly head-on crash in Polk County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The fatal wreck was reported at 1:15 a.m. on County Road 557 at Old Lake Alfred Road, south of Interstate 4 and north of U.S. Highway 17.

The FHP said Joseph Flobert Senatus died in the crash.

Troopers said Mario Alejandro Rodriguez, 20, of Winter Haven, was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon north on C.R. 557 when he traveled into the southbound lane and struck Senatus' 1994 Toyota Camry.

Senatus died at the scene, the FHP said.

Rodriguez and his passenger, a 17-year-old Polk City girl, suffered serious injures and were taken to a hospital.

Charges are pending, the FHP said.

No other details have been released.
