ORLANDO, Fla. – It seems that everything we have that is legally bound to our lives can be tracked down by a few simple things, whether it be your Social Security number, date of birth, maiden name or some security question. But does that include your driver's license?
Dan Moro, of Thornton Park, asked, "Am I allowed to drive without my driver's license if I know my Social Security number?"
Florida Statute 322.15 says, "Every licensee shall have his or her driver license."
A driver must have his or her driver's license physically in their possession while operating any motor vehicle. Driving is a privilege and comes with a few very strict rules. Having your license with you is one of those requirements.
Your driver's license can be located via your Social Security number, however, this is extremely time-consuming and sometimes not available to law enforcement officers. Having your license provides immediate identification in the case of emergency in a situation in which you may not be able to speak for yourself.
Not having your license on you is enforceable, but it can be corrected. If you are pulled over and receive a ticket for not having your driver's license, you can show your license to the Clerk of the Courts office and have the ticket drastically reduced for a dismissal fee.
If you're driving, it's best to have your license with you.
