Potato truck catches fire on I-4

Crews working to reopen all westbound lanes

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A tractor-trailer carrying sweet potatoes caught fire on I-4 due to a mechanical issue, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.

The trailer suffered a mechanical issue traveling westbound near mile marker 35 around 5:10 a.m. Monday.

The driver Steven Tillman, 62, drove to the emergency shoulder as the trailer became engulfed in flames. Tillman was not injured.

The westbound lanes of I-4 were closed due to an extensive smoke hazard. The inside lane was reopened, but crews are still working to reopen the westbound lanes.
