22-year-old killed in crash with big rig on US 27 in Lake County

Fatal crash reported near Heritage Drive

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A 22-year-old man was killed Thursday morning in a crash with a semitrailer in Lake County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash was reported around 5:30 a.m. on U.S. 27 at Heritage Drive, south of the Florida Turnpike.

According to the FHP, the man was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu when he failed to slow for an unknown reason and crashed into the back of a big rig.

The driver of the Impala, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead, troopers said. His name has not been released.

The driver of the semitrailer, a 62-year-old Miami man, was not injured, according to the FHP.

Southbound lanes of U.S. 27 were blocked in the area, but the road was later reopened.

No other details have been released.
