VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A reckless driver caused a multi-vehicle crash that caused the South Causeway bridge in New Smyrna Beach to be closed for hours on Monday afternoon, according to a news release.
New Smyrna Beach police said that around 1 p.m., they received reports of the reckless driver, identified Tuesday by authorities as Boyd Cosner, in the 7300 block of Turtlemound Road.
A deputy from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office then located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near 3rd Avenue and South Peninsula Ave, according to the News Smyrna Beach Police Department.
Police said the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed toward the South Causeway bridge.

According to the release, deputies activated their lights but lost visual contact with the vehicle as it sped over the bridge.
Police said a short time later, the vehicle crashed on the west side of the bridge near Magnolia Street.

According to the release, at least five vehicles were involved in the crash.
Cosner, who faces charges of fleeing/attempting to elude and reckless driving, was in stable condition, New Smyrna Beach police said on Tuesday. He also will be issued a seat belt violation citation, police said.
Another driver was taken to a hospital but was later discharged, according to police.
All lanes of the bridge were later reopened.
