Dos and don’ts for driving in Florida’s tropical weather

Trooper Steve on Patrol gives tips for staying safe on road

ORLANDO, Fla. – If you’ve stepped outside lately, you know we’ve had some interesting weather. Tropical systems have been moving in and out of our area, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and unpredictable road conditions.

As much as I love talking about the rules of the road, I want to hit the brakes for a moment and focus on something just as important: safety during inclement weather.

That’s why during today’s Trooper Steve on Patrol live stream, I’ll be sharing some of the very tips I use myself to stay safe behind the wheel when the skies get rough. I’d like to offer them to you too, so you can be better prepared for what Florida’s tropical season might throw your way.

We’ll go over some key dos and don’ts of wet-weather driving, such as:

  • Do slow down. Wet roads mean longer stopping distances.
  • Don’t use cruise control in the rain. It can cause you to lose control if you hydroplane.
  • Do turn on your headlights. Even in daylight, it helps others see you.
  • Don’t drive through standing water. You don’t know how deep it is, and you could stall out or be swept away.
  • Do keep extra distance between vehicles. The more room you have, the more time you have to react.

Plus some others. Florida weather can be wild, but a little preparation and the right mindset can make all the difference.

Join me today during our live stream as we have an open, practical conversation about navigating the roads safely when the weather doesn’t want to cooperate.

Whether you’re commuting to work, picking up the kids, or just heading to the store, these tips could help you avoid a headache or even a crash.

Stay safe out there!
