Teen killed in head-on crash on US-17 in Volusia County, trooper say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old girl was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Volusia County on Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 8:50 p.m. on U.S. 17, south of S.R. 40.

According to a crash report, a Honda Civic was traveling north on U.S. 17, south of S.R. 40. At the same time, an International 4700 truck was traveling south on U.S. 17, also south of S.R. 40.

Troopers said the Civic was attempting to pass traffic and traveled into the southbound lane and into the direct path of the truck.

According to the report, the front of the Civic struck the front of the truck.

The driver of the Civic, a 16-year-old Pierson girl, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck’s driver, identified as a 34-year-old Pierson man, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Troopers said both directions of U.S. 17 are currently blocked south of S.R. 40.

The crash remains under investigation.
