Cash will no longer be accepted for tolls along State Road 417

Drivers must pay tolls electronically starting Aug. 20

Drivers in Central Florida must adjust to a major change starting Wednesday as State Road 417 phases out cash tolls, marking the end of an era.

Beginning Aug. 20, drivers on SR 417 must pay tolls electronically with a SunPass, E-ZPass, or toll-by-plate cameras. Cash will no longer be accepted.

Crews have already sealed off the familiar cash booths, with coin drops and change dispensers now out of service.

The new system uses electronic readers and plate cameras to register every vehicle and ensure drivers are billed appropriately and even if one technology fails, backup methods are in place.

“There are multiple ways to make sure drivers are being charged the right amount,” a toll maintenance worker said.

Regular drivers aren’t surprised by the transition.

“It’s been a long time since I used cash,” said Alisia Smith, who travels SR 417 with an E-ZPass. “It doesn’t really bother me — I just go by.”

Officials urge drivers to obtain SunPass or E-ZPass transponders to avoid higher fees associated with mail-in plate billing.
