Vehicle collided with stopped Mercedes, FHP says

SANFORD, Fla. – A driver died Monday after striking a guardrail on Interstate 4 and falling onto State Road 46 below, shutting down the roadway for several hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on Monday.

According to a crash report, a 2008 Honda Accord was traveling east on I-4, approaching the SR-46 overpass.

For reasons unknown, troopers said the Honda driver ran off the roadway to the left and struck the median guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn onto SR-46, where it collided with a Mercedes that was stopped in the eastbound left turn lane, troopers said.

“This is my first airborne crash that I’ve seen,” FHP Trooper Michael Allen said. “Unfortunately, I’ve had way too many fatalities that I’ve been on scene with. One is way too many. But there’s certainly a lot, a lot to take in and work through here with the vehicle being airborne.”

Footage of the crash taken by Trooper Steve showed the overturned Honda and the damaged Mercedes.

The roadway was closed in both directions but later reopened after 3 p.m.
