MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A motorcyclist was arrested Saturday in Marion County on allegations of traveling over 105 mph in a 45 mph zone with a child as his passenger.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said David Johnson was clocked at 106 mph in the 1600 block of SE 58th Avenue.

A Marion County sheriff’s corporal initiated a traffic stop and followed the motorcycle through multiple turns in a residential neighborhood before Johnson finally stopped at a home, officials said.

During the stop, the corporal realized the passenger on the back of the motorcycle was a child, according to the sheriff’s office.

Johnson said he was experiencing mechanical issues and was “testing” the motorcycle, according to deputies.

“Unfortunately, testing a motorcycle at over 100 mph through a residential neighborhood — with a child on the back, not really the best option," the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post titled “Shortcut to Jail” that included video of the incident.

Johnson was arrested on charges of child neglect and operating a vehicle at 100+ mph.
