ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Work is nearing completion on a project designed to improve safety and traffic flow at one of the busiest intersections in Altamonte Springs.

Since Fall 2024, construction has been ongoing at the intersection of State Road (S.R.) 436 and S.R. 434.

Work ramped up on March 9 as overnight lane closers were scheduled for the week to allow crews to perform traffic signal work in the area.

Russ Pilarski lives nearby and was impacted by the closures.

“At nighttime, it’s terrible because it backs up for a half mile down the road,” Pilarski said. “All the roads are cones. It’s just hard to maneuver.”

The project includes an upgrade to traffic signals, removal of free-flow right-turn lanes, and placement of turning movements under signal control.

Among other improvements were upgraded pedestrian crosswalks, signals, and widened turn lanes.

The $2.7 million project is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation and is part of the agency’s broader initiative to improve roadway accessibility for all modes of transportation.

According to FDOT, the project is estimated to be finished in the Spring.
