Hurricane Irma rips roof off Cocoa Beach Police Department

COCOA, Fla. – Strong winds from Hurricane Irma caused widespread damage Sunday in Brevard County, including ripping part of the roof off the Cocoa Beach Police Department.

In a Facebook post made by Brevard County Emergency Management, Cocoa Beach Mayor Ben Malik said no personnel were in the building at the time because they had moved to the new Cocoa Beach Fire Department to work.

Earlier in the day, six mobile homes in Palm Bay were destroyed by a tornado that spawned from Hurricane Irma.

Other homes were damaged in Palm Bay, too, officials said.

Meanwhile, a road was washed out in Cocoa.  Drivers were told to avoid Indian River Drive at Sunset Terrace.
