Central Florida faces afternoon storms and triple-digit heat index

A few storms could produce heavy rain at times

ORLANDO, Fla. – Get ready to keep the umbrella handy this Sunday.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon. The first half of the day should be mainly clear, but as rain chances rise to about 50-60% through the afternoon and evening, some neighborhoods may see downpours and a few claps of thunder.

Planner

The timing for those pop-up showers and storms is forecast in the 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. window. Most of the heavier activity will move toward northern zones, including Marion, Flagler, and Volusia counties, later in the afternoon.

Rainfall amounts are expected to range between a quarter of an inch and an inch, with locally higher totals possible if storms linger over one spot. Still, it won’t be a total washout for all areas — some spots could get missed altogether.

4 p.m.

It’s going to be a steamy day across Central Florida, with afternoon highs in the lower 90s throughout the region and heat-index values climbing to 99-102 degrees in places like Orlando and Sanford.

Heat Index

If you plan to be outdoors — whether for work or weekend fun — be sure to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed. Conditions are expected to be especially tough in direct sunlight as the heat builds through the afternoon.
