ORLANDO, Fla. – Sunday was just what the doctor ordered. There is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to the drought in the Sunshine State, but Sunday was a nice start.
The highest amounts of rain fell along and north of I-4 and near I-75. Not coincidentally that is where the biggest improvements on the Keetch-Byram drought index were found.
The numbers in the graphic above is an average taken across the county. The higher the number, the drier the soil and easier it becomes for fires to start and spread.
For perspective, 500 typically induces a burn ban for most counties while 600 dry conditions become critical.
All of Central Florida saw a significant reduction in Monday’s KBDI update when compared to Sunday’s before the rain.
The official drought monitor released by The United States Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration comes out Thursday morning.
