Strong storms taper off, more rain and heat ahead this weekend

Orlando hit 95 degrees Friday as strong storms developed. Rain chances stay high through the weekend before dropping to around 20% Monday and Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. – After another hot and steamy day across Central Florida, we’re still tracking scattered showers and thunderstorms through the evening, but some stray storms could linger as late as midnight.

Orlando reached 95 degrees Friday afternoon before storms began to develop. Some of the strongest storms today have produced wind gusts of 50-60 mph, small hail, torrential rainfall, and frequent lightning. Localized flooding remains possible where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.

The unsettled weather pattern continues Saturday as deep tropical moisture remains in place across Florida. Expect a 70% chance for showers and thunderstorms across Central Florida, with storms becoming more numerous during the afternoon and evening hours.

A few showers and storms could develop north of Orlando as early as the morning hours Saturday, while areas farther south likely stay mostly dry until the afternoon. Storm coverage is expected to increase significantly after 3 p.m.

The strongest storms on Saturday could once again produce gusty winds of 45 to 55 mph, small hail, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. An isolated funnel cloud or waterspout cannot be ruled out near boundary collisions.

Father’s Day Forecast

Rain chances remain elevated on Father’s Day, but we’ll trim them back slightly compared to Saturday. Coverage is expected to be closer to 50% to 70%, with the greatest storm chances developing during the afternoon and evening hours, especially between Orlando and the I-95 corridor.

If you’re making outdoor Father’s Day plans, the first half of the day looks to offer the best opportunity to stay dry before storms develop later in the afternoon.

Drier Air Arrives Next Week

A noticeable change arrives early next week as high pressure strengthens across the region. Much drier air is expected to move into Central Florida Monday and Tuesday, significantly reducing rain chances.

Expect only a 20% chance for isolated showers and storms both days, with many spots remaining dry.

Despite the lower rain chances, temperatures will stay hot. Afternoon highs will climb into the low to mid-90s, with some inland locations reaching the mid-90s. Humidity levels will continue to push heat index values into the triple digits during the hottest part of the day.

The combination of heat and humidity will keep a Moderate to locally Major HeatRisk in place through the weekend, so remember to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon hours.
