ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando has installed 21 speed cameras in school zones in an effort to slow drivers down and improve student safety.
During the first week of school in 2025, Orange County deputies made nearly 700 traffic stops in school zones and cited 249 drivers for speeding, according to figures cited by officials. Video posted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office shows drivers stopped at speeds well above posted limits.
The cameras will begin issuing mailed warnings on Aug. 11 for drivers recorded going more than 10 mph over the school-zone speed limit. The warning period runs through Sept. 24. Starting Sept. 25, violations carry a $100 ticket.
The city said the camera locations were chosen after a speed study identified schools with higher pedestrian safety risks, considering roadway conditions, crash history and speeding.

Neighbors near the schools told News 6 they support the cameras.
Some residents who live near the schools said they believe the cameras will make drivers slow down.
“It should if it just makes people aware that kids are out and about,” said Janice Junkin, who lives in the area.
“It’s good for the residents of the town so that there’s no dispute … and that’s the safety of the children,” Sattler said.
“All the time,” Sattler said when asked whether he sees people speeding in front of schools. “Major distractions with people on the roadway today.”
