Tropics Watch: Florida feels impacts from hurricanes Imelda, Humberto

Hurricane season ends December 1

ORLANDO, Fla. – Hurricane Imelda on Wednesday morning continued to strengthen and become better organized, with satellite imagery showing a more defined eye and a symmetric structure. Winds have increased to around 90 mph, and further strengthening is expected as it accelerates east-northeast toward Bermuda.

Imelda is forecast to pass near or possibly over Bermuda later in the day as a Category 2 hurricane.

After passing Bermuda, Imelda will likely begin transitioning into a powerful extratropical system, but it will remain strong and continue to generate large swells across a wide area of the Atlantic for several more days.

Meanwhile, Humberto is weakening and showing signs of losing its tropical characteristics. Satellite data shows convection pulling away from the center nearing the end of its life cycle.

Even though both hurricane remain well offshore, their combined influence is creating widespread hazardous marine conditions along the East Coast of the United States.

Expect large swells, high surf and life-threatening rip currents to continue through the end of the week, even here in Florida.

Hurricane season runs through November.
