The National Hurricane Center has highlighted the first area of interest of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
Forecasters are monitoring the Bay of Campeche, where a broad area of low pressure could develop late this week. While conditions are not expected to favor significant development, the system has a 10% chance of becoming a tropical depression during the next seven days.
This area of interest comes as Tropical Storm Cristina continues to move across the eastern Pacific Ocean south of El Salvador. Cristina is embedded within a broader area of tropical moisture stretching across Central America and the adjacent waters.
That moisture could help develop a low-pressure area over the Bay of Campeche. The system would likely move inland over eastern Mexico late this weekend, limiting its opportunity to organize.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the system has a near-zero chance of development over the next 48 hours and only a low 10% chance of formation over the next 7 days.
At this time, no impacts are expected for Florida.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1 and runs through November 30.
