Woman shot in chest driving on rural Apopka road: random or targeted?

29-year-old woman still in recovery

APOPKA, Fla. – Carla Monnier's friends and family are describing her as a fighter after she was shot last week while driving on a rural Apopka road.

"She is also a wonderful wife, daughter, sister, physical therapist and a fur-mom to a dog named Brody," loved ones wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help Monnier and her husband with her mounting medical bills.

A car towed from the corner of rural Boy Scout Road and Darity Street in Apopka showed two bullet holes in the driver's side door and a shattered window.

Orange County deputies said the 29-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and could not tell them what had happened to her.

Deputies said Monnier was on the phone with a friend when she was shot. The friend heard five shots, the phone went dead, and the friend called 911.

Deputies could not say if she was targeted or shot randomly.

By Monday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had raised more than $50,000 for Monnier and her family.

Monnier is now in stable condition and will undergo more surgeries and tests, the page said.

On a "Prayers for Carla" Facebook page, Monnier's husband wrote that her third surgery was successful and she will remain in the intensive care unit as her body re-learns to function properly.

In a message to News 6, Monnier's husband wrote that he was grateful for the love and support his family has received.
