What is Florida’s .02 or ‘Zero Tolerance’ law? Trooper Steve explains

News 6 viewers ask questions about Florida traffic laws

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve answers viewer questions about the rules of the road, helping Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve on Thursday was asked about Florida’s .02 law, aka “Zero Tolerance Law.”

Look, I get it, you just turned 18 or 20 and you’re out with friends and think, “One drink won’t hurt, right?”

Well, in Florida, the law says otherwise.

For drivers under the age of 21, even a tiny amount of alcohol can cost you big time.

If your blood alcohol level hits 0.02 (2%), you’re officially over the legal limit to drive. That’s not even a full drink for most people — we’re talking sips here.

If you get pulled over, you’re looking at a six-month license suspension for a first offense, and longer if it happens again. And if you refuse the breath test, that’s an automatic one-year suspension.

But here’s where I’m just being real with you: if you’re under 21, you shouldn’t be drinking in the first place. Not just because it’s illegal, but because your safety, your license and your future are way more valuable than a quick drink with friends.

Stay safe, make smart choices and if you ever wonder if it’s worth it, it’s not.
