Moving to Florida is exciting — the sunshine, the beaches, new opportunities and, of course, getting used to how things work on our roadways.

One of the most common questions I get from new residents is a simple one: “How much time do I have to switch my driver’s license and registration once I move here?”

Florida law gives you 30 days from the time you establish residency to get your Florida driver’s license.

Once you start a job, enroll your kids in school, register to vote or even just decide that Florida is officially home, the clock starts ticking.

The same 30-day rule applies to your vehicle registration.

Before you can register your vehicle, you’ll need to get Florida auto insurance, and it must come from a licensed Florida insurance provider.

Once that’s in place, you can head to your local tax collector’s office to complete the process.

It’s a quick timeline, but it’s designed to keep our roads safe and ensure every driver is properly licensed and insured under Florida law.

If you’re new here, welcome and take care of these steps early so you can enjoy everything the Sunshine State has to offer.

The last thing you want is a non-moving traffic violation.
