ORLANDO, Fla. - This week's News 6 Getting Results Award winner has come a long way.
Angel Sanchez grew up in inner city Miami. He started getting involved with gangs at the age of 12. At 16, Sanchez was convicted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.
The judge handed Sanchez a 30-year prison sentence. But while he was behind bars, Sanchez found a passion.
He started spending time in the law library. He even got a job there.
"And for the first time in my life -- forget prison -- the first time in my life, I had my own desk. I sat down at that desk and felt a lot older and more mature than my actual age," Sanchez said.
Sanchez earned his GED in prison and gained enough legal knowledge to get a judge to cut his sentence in half.
Sanchez served 12 years then went on to Valencia College where he graduated with honors and gave the commencement speech.
Recently, Sanchez graduated from the University of Central Florida and earned an elite scholarship that will pay for him to go to law school.
He plans to attend the University of Miami. But he's on the waiting list at Yale University.
