These are Florida’s best car insurance companies, study says. Here’s why

This month, U.S. News & World Report has updated its ranking of the best car insurance companies in the U.S.

The insurers included on the list are those who accept new business in states that cover at least 60% of the country’s population.

In addition, researchers said they surveyed over 1,000 customers to assess their satisfaction across four key metrics:

  • Value from the Policy
  • Claims Handling
  • Customer Service
  • Customer Loyalty

The study also looked at factors like consumer complaints, annual premiums, state availability, discounts, purchasing options, and optional coverage options to determine how these companies fared.

In terms of average annual car rates, the study states that the companies with the lowest rates are as follows:

But cost isn’t the only factor that goes into determining the best insurers.

Below is the full ranking for the top companies that operate in Florida as of Aug. 1.


1. Travelers 4.8/5

PROS:

  • Scored highest in our rating of the top auto insurers
  • Fourth-lowest average rate

CONS:

  • Can’t get accident forgiveness in every state

“Travelers’ average annual rate ($1,549) is far lower than the national average cost of a year-long policy. The company also received generally positive feedback in our consumer survey, which asked questions about customer service, the claim process, and other aspects of insurer performance.

In addition, Travelers has more optional coverage than many competitors, and an extensive list of discounts to help lower costs for those who qualify."

2. USAA 4.7/5

PROS:

  • Best for the military community, according to our research
  • Positive feedback from consumers for claims and customer service

CONS:

  • Policies only available to members of the military, veterans, and their families

“USAA received some of the strongest consumer feedback in our survey in the areas of customer service and claims, and most respondents said they were “very likely” to recommend the insurer to someone shopping for coverage. However, the company’s NAIC Complaint Index score indicates more complaints than average."

3. American National 4.6/5

PROS:

  • Lowest average rate among insurers we reviewed
  • In the survey, most who filed a claim were satisfied with its resolution

CONS:

  • Less add-on coverage than many competitors

4. Geico 4.5/5

PROS:

  • Most discounts among companies in the ratings
  • Positive survey feedback for the ease of filing a claim

CONS:

  • Not a lot of add-ons to help personalize a policy

“Geico policyholders in our survey gave the company high marks for claims handling and expressed generally favorable views of the company’s customer service. Most said they were ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to both recommend Geico to others and to renew their auto policy. The company sells car insurance in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. NAIC data indicates it receives a lower-than-average number of complaints.”

5. Progressive 4.4/5

PROS:

  • Best for senior drivers, according to the research
  • Receives fewer complaints than average

CONS:

  • Higher-than-average rates for teenage motorists

“Progressive receives a lower-than-average number of complaints, as indicated by its NAIC Complaint Index score. In our survey, readers provided mostly positive feedback regarding its customer service and claims handling. The company sells auto coverage in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.”

6. Nationwide 4.3/5

PROS:

  • Customers likely to renew their auto coverage with this insurer, according to the data
  • Some of the lowest average costs for drivers with poor credit

CONS:

  • Sample rates higher than average for young adult drivers

“Nationwide received strong survey feedback in the area of customer service, and generally favorable responses for the ease of filing a claim. Its NAIC Complaint Index score suggests it receives fewer complaints than average. Nationwide sells car insurance in 46 states and Washington, D.C.”

7. Auto-Owners 4.2/5

PROS:

  • Low rates for teenagers and several discounts for young motorists
  • Cheaper than average for drivers with a speeding ticket

CONS:

  • Only available in 26 states

"Auto-Owners received generally favorable feedback from consumers in our survey. For instance, 50% said they were completely satisfied with the ease of claim filing, and 55% said they were completely satisfied with their claim’s resolution. The company’s NAIC Complaint Index score suggests it receives fewer complaints than average. Auto-Owners sells coverage in 26 states."

8. Amica 4/5

PROS:

  • High marks for customer service from consumers in the survey
  • More discounts than many competitors

CONS:

  • Highest sample premium in the rate study for drivers with a DUI

“Amica sells car insurance in 49 states and Washington, D.C. NAIC data indicates fewer complaints than average for the insurer, and it performed well in our survey for customer service and claims. For example, 69% of consumers said they were completely satisfied with the ease of contacting Amica customer service (21% were somewhat satisfied).”

9. The Hartford 3.9/5

PROS:

  • Best usage-based insurance program, according to the data
  • Competitive sample rates for seniors and drivers with poor credit

CONS:

  • Non-AARP members must purchase policies through independent agents

"The Hartford sells car insurance in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Survey feedback regarding its customer service was generally positive. Forty percent of respondents were completely satisfied with the customer service provided (29% were somewhat satisfied). Its NAIC Complaint Index score indicates more complaints than average.

The Hartford provides coverage through the AARP’s Auto Insurance program. To buy coverage through the program, you need to be at least 50 and an AARP member. You can, however, add younger spouses and children to the program. If you’re not an AARP member, you can purchase coverage from The Hartford through an independent agent with no age requirement."
