Orange County principal named best in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Patty Harrelson -- principal at Rosemont Elementary School in Orange County -- was named the principal of the year by the Florida Department of Education.

Harrelson won the 2011-2012 Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership during the seventh annual Commissioner's Summit for Principals in Tallahassee.

Harrelson was one of three finalists, all of whom work in Central Florida.

The state also awarded Sanford Middle School Assistant Principal Dumarie Rodriguez-Dillard with the Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award.

"I'm honored to recognize Principal Harrelson and Assistant Principal Rodriguez-Dillard for their exceptional dedication to creating learning environments that encourage students and teachers to reach their full potential," said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. "Both serve as visionary educational leaders in their communities and display unwavering commitment to student success."

Harrelson received a $5,000 check as well as $1,000 for Rosemont Elementary.  Rodriguez-Dillard was given a $2,500 check and $575 for Sanford Middle School.
