MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – A statue of Juan Ponce de Leon was moved to Melbourne Beach on Thursday morning.

The 10-foot-tall bronze statue was transported from artist Rafael Picon's studio in Rockledge to a Melbourne Beach site commemorating the landing of the explorer on Florida's East Coast 500 years ago.

Brevard County's tourism tax agency on Wednesday. approved allocating $67,000 in hotel tax money to help pay for the statue's display. Lighting and flagpoles will also be installed at the site.

An unveiling is scheduled for Dec. 28, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
