Arrest made in Cocoa Beach New Year's Eve hit-and-run

Boy, 12, severely injured in crash

Cocoa Beach police have arrested a 28-year-old woman in the New Year's Eve hit-and-run crash that left a 12-year-old boy severely injured.

Michelle Lynn Simkins, of Cocoa, was arrested at her home Wednesday after police found the vehicle matching the police description near her residence, police said.

Detectives said a number of tips led them to the vehicle, which ultimately led them to believe Simkins was behind the wheel.

Simkins is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury.

Thomas Gregory, 12, was struck by a black sport utility vehicle as he played basketball with his friends outside his home on Bahama Boulevard.

He suffered a broken pelvis and legs, while the injuries also left him with damaged lungs.

Local 6 spoke to Thomas, who said he is thankful police made an arrest.

"It's good news to me that they can't hurt anyone else," he said.

Thomas' father said the arrest is a weight off of their shoulders.

"I think it gives us some degree of satisfaction I suppose, a sense that justice is prevailing," said Jeff Gregory.

Simkins is being held on a $25,000 bond at the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes.
