Man charged in Brevard County teen's shooting death

Man thought gun was unloaded when he pointed it at teen, police say

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – Brevard County Sheriff's Office charged on Tuesday a 22-year-old man in the shooting death of a 17-year-old in Merritt Island.

Rodney Clay Patrick Jr. of Floral Lane, was arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

Deputies said Douglas Trey Winslow was visiting the Floral Lane home when he was shot and killed at around 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the report, Winslow and Patrick were listening to music when Patrick picked up the firearm, which he thought was not loaded, and started acting out the lyrics of the song.

Deputies said Patrick was pointing the firearm at Winslow when it discharged, killing Winslow.

Deputies said Patrick lied in the 911 call when he said Winslow shot himself in the head and further investigation determined Patrick was the one who pulled the trigger.

Patrick is being held at the Brevard County jail on no bond.
