Port Orange police continue to investigate fatal shooting

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – An 8-year-old boy died on Friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his grandparents' house, Port Orange Police said.

The shooting was reported in the 800 block of Hudson Lane.

Police said Christopher Scurry, Jr., and his 12-year-old brother were in the home with their 80-year-old great-grandfather in the other room, when it is believed that Christopher accidentally shot himself with a 9 mm handgun that was reported stolen out of South Daytona. Details on the gun were not immediately available.

Police said that when they arrived, the Christopher's brother was performing CPR with the help of a neighbor.

Christopher was taken to Halifax Hospital in critical condition, where he died just before 1 p.m.

Family then began gathering at the house in mourning.

Satina Hearman, Scurry's cousin, said the family was all together Thursday.

"We just came back from a camping trip yesterday," said Hearman.  "All of us went on a camping trip for three days."

It's not clear where the gun was found in the home, according to a news release.

"Children are very curious at 8-years-old," said neighbor Linnea Heddle.  "Who knows, who knows what happened."
