Parents found dead near car with 3 children inside ID'd, deputies say

Children unharmed, placed in care of relatives

DeLAND, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper found a man and woman dead near a disabled SUV along Interstate 4 in Volusia County early Saturday, with three children inside the vehicle, officials said.

Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 30, both of Ormond Beach, were found dead around 2 a.m. off I-4 near DeLand.

The trooper said a maroon SUV was parked on the side of the interstate at mile marker 122 with its hazard lights on. The trooper stopped near the vehicle and found the man and woman dead outside the SUV, the FHP said.

The trooper also found their three young children inside the vehicle, the FHP said. The children, ranging from 8 months to 4 years old, were unharmed, but were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for precautionary purposes, troopers said.

An investigator with the Florida Department of Children and Families also went to the hospital to assist with the investigation, according to officials.

"The safety and health of these children is our first priority and we will continue to help the family in any way that we can during this difficult time," DCF spokesman John Harrell said in a statement. "The children are safe and are currently in the care of relatives. We responded quickly once we were notified about this incident, and we have been working closely with law enforcement.  Additional details are confidential.

Volusia County deputies said that although investigators did not immediately find obvious signs of foul play, the causes of death are still being investigated.

No other details have been released.
