ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County homeowner said her surveillance cameras captured a teen youth-group member opening packages on her family's porch.
The teen didn't take what was inside the package, but instead, only sifted through it, Allison Mastopietro said.
"The next day, we reviewed our footage from the video surveillance that we have and that's when we realized that we had somebody open our mail," Mastopietro said. "I was irate. I felt you live in a nice community and you think your packages will be safe and it just makes you question a lot of things."
The video was recorded about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Mastopietro also said the teen targeted her neighbor's house.
In the video, the teen is seen wearing a shirt for Florida Youth of America. The homeowner said she called the youth group and the man told her this isn't the first time a member was caught getting his or her hands on a package at a doorstep.
News 6 called Florida Youth of America. The man who answered the phone said the group has identified the teen and he's been suspended from the organization for eight weeks. After that, the man said, he's welcome back.
The group said it does not solicit door to door. Instead, the man who answered the phone said the teens volunteer to knock on doors to simply explain to homeowners about their organization and fundraising efforts.
"These people have to learn eventually -- they will learn," Mastopietro said. "If not, they will do something so bad that they will end up in jail for life. So, it's just sad that a teen is doing this at such a young age."
The homeowner said she plans to file charges against the teen.
