The law requires these people to wear bike helmets

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Tonya, of Waterford Lakes, asked, “Does Florida have a bicycle helmet law?”

"Yes, Florida traffic law says bicycle riders and passengers who are under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that fits properly," Trooper Steve said. "This includes having the chin strap securely fastened."

In Orange County, a parent could receive a ticket for over $62 if their child is not wearing a helmet.

"Some parents think this is excessive, saying, 'It's just a helmet,'" Trooper Steve said. "That helmet is designed to protect the most vital spot on your body. Having the helmet on may not be fashionable, but I can promise you it will reduce injury and save you a few dollars."

You can reference Florida Statute 316.2065 for further details.
