Car crashes into bicyclists in Altamonte, killing baby, police say

18-month-old pronounced dead at the scene

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – An 18-month-old baby was killed when a car struck a man and woman who were pulling their child in a bicycle trailer Sunday night in Altamonte Springs, authorities said.

The fatal crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at the corner of Maitland Boulevard and Eden Park Road.

Altamonte Springs police said the driver of a silver car, a woman in her 40s, drove onto the sidewalk for an unknown reason and struck the family of three.

A 36-year-old man and 37-year-old woman, both of whom were riding bikes, were taken to a hospital with critical injuries, police said. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said Monday that the father remained in critical condition. The mother underwent surgery Monday morning and is still hospitalized, police said.

Gary Faircloth said he was riding by at the time of the crash and called 911 after it happened.

"I heard a loud noise and I saw the man down on the ground in front of a bicycle," Faircloth said.

Faircloth said the mother was frantic.

"She was screaming, 'My baby, my baby,' and she was trying to crawl towards the man who was literally laid flat out on the sidewalk area with his bike basically on top of him," Faircloth said.

Faircloth said a nurse who was riding by was able to help until first responders arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, it was too late.

"She said she wishes she could have done more and the baby was starring at her. She was dead," Faircloth said.

The driver, who was not injured, stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police, officials said.

Authorities initially said the baby was 4 months old.
