UCF student with BB gun prompts law enforcement response

Alerts were sent earlier in the night in text and email

ORLANDO, Fla. – Students at the University of Central Florida were sent an alert to seek shelter immediately Friday night.

The message said: "If you are in area of Tower 1 seek shelter immediately in nearest building, away from doors and windows."

UCF Police said they made contact with the individual who entered Tower 1 with a firearm.

Officers said they learned he was carrying a BB gun.

Investigators said there is no active threat to campus. Police apologized to students on how they initially alerted the community.

"We understand that words matter. In a situation with heightened stress, we made a poor choice in our initial language. We know this caused undue panic and stress by those we serve and protect, and for that we apologize," police posted on social media.

West Plaza Drive was completely blocked off near the Addition Financial Arena.

Investigators will continue to inform students and the public of the latest updates on the department's Twitter account
