2-year-old drowns in pond at Melbourne apartment complex, police say

Officer pulled child from water

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 2-year-old child died Sunday after being pulled from a pond by a Melbourne police officer, authorities said.

Melbourne police were called about 4:30 p.m. to the Caribbean Villas apartment complex at 2639 Grenada Bay, where the child was found in a small pond behind a clubhouse, officials said.

A woman who called 911 claiming to be the child's mother said her son, Trace, hadn't been seen in about 20 to 30 minutes. She said she had just returned home from Dollar General and the children's father had been watching them while she was out shopping.

"Don't tell me that he went in the pond," a child can be heard saying on the 911 call.

The mother told a 911 operator that the front door must have been left open, but she doesn't know why it wasn't shut.

An officer who found the boy jumped in the water, pulled the child out and began emergency rescue procedures, according to police.

The Melbourne Police Department said Melbourne Fire Rescue and Brevard County Fire Rescue arrived and continued CPR on the child, but determined that the child had died.

An investigation is continuing.
