Cocoa Beach officials to discuss parking meter times

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – If you've been to Cocoa Beach, you probably have noticed there aren't very many free parking spots. Those that are, allow you to park for three hours and they're located on State Road A1A in the downtown area near Minutemen Causeway.

However, city officials are now talking about cutting the time down to an hour and a half and some tourists didn't like the sound of that.

"No, I don't think it'll be a good idea," said Burt Wagner.

"It's not a good idea, no. Not happy about it," said Tanya Recinos.

For Recinos, only having an hour and a half to park doesn't give her family enough time to enjoy the beach.

"That's very short," she said. "You can't do anything in an hour and a half."

Wagner agrees, but said he sees why commissioners are looking into the change.

"If you're just coming to eat, an hour and a half might work," he said. "If you're local, an hour and a half might be good. But if you're from Orlando, you need three hours."

According to city documents, some officials are worried that people won't go to restaurants and shops in the downtown corridor because of the lack of parking.

Some business owners even said they keep a clock on the spots in front of their stores.

But for families who are looking to enjoy the beach, the proposed time just isn't enough.

"If you're going to go, it's going to be a minimum of 2 to 3 hours if you drive down here," said Wagner.

Commissioners are expected to go over this proposal at a meeting Thursday at 7 p.m.
