Body discovered inside trailer at Wickham Park campground in Melbourne

Police say they are investigating death as suspicious

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A well-being check on a trailer at a Wickham Park campground led to the discovery of human remains, Melbourne police reported.

News 6 partner Florida Today reports police officers found a badly decomposed body inside a fifth-wheel trailer after being called to the park’s campsite to check on the occupant.

“It’s a suspicious death. Right now, we don’t know what we have,” Police Lt. Scott Mostert said.

“We don’t believe there’s anything that threatens the community, but we are investigating,” Mostert said.

The white Bighorn trailer with a Florida license tag was parked in the shade of an oak tree at Lot 46 in Campground A. Sunday afternoon, yellow police tape ringed the vicinity. Melbourne CSI personnel wearing haz-mat suits collected evidence inside the trailer, and a Brevard County Medical Examiner's Office officer reported to the scene.

Park rangers had previously placed a non-payment notice on the trailer and alerted police when they did not hear back from the resident. Police arrived about 4 p.m. Saturday to contact the occupant. That's when the remains were located inside, police said.

Brevard County Parks and Recreation operates the 133-site Wickham Park campground complex. Responding to complaints and increasing police incidents in August, county officials hired a private security service for nighttime patrols.
