ORLANDO, Fla. – A new report by WalletHub on Tuesday details the hardest-working cities in America. And one city in particular took the top spot for Florida.
The study examines over 100 of America’s largest cities, ranking them based on the following criteria:
- Direct Work Factors: Includes average workweek hours, employment rate, idle youth, and share of workers with unused vacation time, among other metrics
- Indirect Work Factors: Includes commute times, volunteer hours, average daily leisure time, and the share of workers with multiple jobs, among other metrics
“Hard work is the backbone of America’s economy and a big reason why the country has become so successful, as Americans outwork people in many other developed economies.
In addition, between 40% and 64% of Americans leave at least some of their allotted vacation time on the table, depending on the city.
While working long hours, minimizing time off, and having side jobs all lead to increased productivity, they can also have negative effects on people’s physical and mental health. It’s important for people to figure out how to work hard without overworking.”

Nationwide, the top three cities ended up being Cheyenne, Wyoming (No.1); Anchorage, Alaska (No. 2); and Washington, D.C. (No. 3).
While the Sunshine State didn’t crack the top 10, the ranking did reveal that Florida’s hardest-working city is Tampa, all the way up at No. 28.
While the Cigar City ranked high in terms of direct work factors, it lagged majorly for the indirect factors — a common theme among all of the Florida entries on this year’s list.
