PALM BAY, Fla. – Speed cameras in school zones received the final go-ahead in Brevard County’s largest city.

Palm Bay city commissioners on Thursday night unanimously voted in favor of installing the equipment, meant to spot anyone going at least 10 mph above the speed limit and to have those findings reviewed by a traffic enforcement officer. Violators will be sent $100 tickets in the mail.

“Protecting our children is critical and even moreover as I stated at first reading, it’s another tool law enforcement can have for investigative purposes, so I’m all on board with that,” said Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina.

The ordinance allows for local hearings for individuals who want to challenge violation notices, also calling for a public announcement and awareness campaign at least 30 days before enforcement of the system commences.

The city still needs to formally pick a company to supply the new cameras.

Some other locations, including Osceola County and Eustis, have already approved similar systems.
