The artists range from just starting out in their careers to having more experience. Often times, they have been featured in exhibitions before and have awards from national and international levels.
According to the art museum, in all cases, they select artists who explore art and culture in original and visually creative ways.
This marks the 10th year for the exhibit, and it allows the museum to support artists who live and work in the state.
It also includes a contest. On Friday, during the opening night for the exhibit, Miami-based artist, Yanira Collado, was announced as the winner of the $20,000 Florida prize. The prize is funded by local philanthropists, Gail and Michael Winn.
Collado is known for her mixed-media art that explores memory, history and cultural identity.
Orlando-based artist, Njeri Kinuthia, won the $2,500 People’s Choice award. Her work explores identity through bold colors and storytelling.
The Florida Prize exhibition will be on display at the Orlando Museum of Art through Aug. 25.
