ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Police Department on Monday evening will host a Teen Driving Safety presentation.

According to its website, the department will discuss the dangers and consequences of racing, the risks associated with aggressive driving and how speeding dramatically reduces reaction time, increasing the likelihood of fatal accidents. The Motors Unit will also be available to answer any traffic-related questions.

Over the weekend, a Windermere High School senior died in a crash, and last month, a Lake Nona student died after a fiery crash on Narcoossee Road.

The police department wrote on its Facebook page that the presentation will serve as a refresher for the community on driving safety.

“This is OPD’s reminder to our community to SLOW DOWN. Speed limits are there to protect everyone — drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike. Stay alert, watch for speed limit signs, and remember that together, we can make our streets safer for all,” the post reads.

The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department reports that in Florida, statistics show the month of March as the deadliest for teen drivers, with both Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day showing increases in dangerous driving behavior, often resulting in fatal crashes or crashes involving serious bodily injury.

“I recognize the importance of teen driver safety, especially when addressing racing and excessive speed. With the recent tragedy in Lake Nona, I felt it was necessary to bring this awareness seminar to the community immediately,” said Orlando Police Chief Chief Eric Smith

The Teen Driving Safety presentation is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Nemours Children’s Hospital Auditorium, located at 6536 Nemours Parkway, Orlando, FL 32827.
