Last week, Orlando Police were called to the Best Western Inn on West Colonial Drive for a reported robbery and stabbing. Investigators said the robber jumped the counter before punching the victim, then stabbing her. Office employee shoots man during machete attack, Orlando police say

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police officers were at a staffing business Tuesday after a man attacked two employees there with a machete. One of the employees took out a gun and shot the attacker, according to officers. Grant argued with a woman and a man who worked there, then went to stab the employees, investigators said. Officers said as Grant was trying to lunge at the employees, one of the workers shot him. Orlando police said they eventually found Grant with a gunshot wound and took him into custody.

Trainer hosts meetings in Orlando neighborhoods to build relationships with law enforcement

ORLANDO, Fla. – A nationally recognized law enforcement trainer hired by the city of Orlando is hosting the first of several community meetings around Orlando aimed at building relationships with people in communities including Parramore, Washington Shores and along Mercy Drive. Dr. Randy Nelson works for the Bethune Cookman University’s Center for Law and Social Justice. Nelson said the action plan will consist of ideas gathered from residents as well as the training seminars he hosts with officers. Nelson said the meetings are invite-only because of the coronavirus pandemic and will consists of a diverse group of people. “I think it gives them a healthy respect from a law enforcement perspective,” said Nelson.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The newest recruiting class from Orlando Police met with community members on Thursday in an effort to build relationships between officers and the neighborhoods they serve. Chief Orlando Rolon said the opportunities for conversation are critical to help build the trust necessary for successful community policing. “Allowing (officers) an opportunity to hear from the people that we serve from the different neighborhoods that make Orlando the city that it is, is golden,” Rolon said. “It kind of sets what we know the expectations of their police officers are,” Torres said. “I don’t want them to think that we’re being targeted just because of the color of our skin,” Duffus said.

Man impersonating officer attempted to pull over off-duty Orlando police officer, officials say

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused of impersonating a law enforcement officer was arrested after officials said the man pulled over an off duty cop. Forde told authorities he drove up behind the BMW, which appeared to be swerving, and activated his emergency lights and siren, officials said. In the body camera video, Forde told police he thought the other driver was impaired. When Forde pulled alongside the BMW, the officer said Forde was dressed in a way that resembled a law enforcement uniform. In the body camera video, Forde told police he was not trying to impersonate an officer.

Orlando Police give update on deadly shooting at credit union

ORLANDO, Fla. Orlando police have released new details about a shooting that left a woman dead outside an Orlando credit union. During a news conference on Wednesday, investigators said Sylvester Ofori, 35, was taken into custody late Tuesday and is accused of killing his wife, Barbara Tommey, 27. A search warrant was later served at the suspects apartment and Ofori was taken into custody without incident, according to police. During Wednesdays news conference, detectives did not indicate if there were any warning signs the led up to the shooting. He was taken into custody on one count of resisting and officer, but the charge was later dropped.

Suspect arrested in fatal shooting outside apartment complex in northwest Orlando

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. A suspect in a fatal shooting outside an apartment complex in northwest Orlando on Aug. 5 has been arrested, according to police. Orlando Police said Maurice Benn Jr.,19, was arrested in Lake County on Friday. Police said the victim and the suspect were acquaintances and an argument ensued. Investigators said Benn is accused of shooting and killing 32-year-old Brian Tassy around 1 a.m. outside of the Pineview Apartments. Benn is also facing attempted first-degree murder with a firearm charge out of Lake County from an incident in June of 2019.

2nd suspect arrested in Orlando homicide

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. A second suspect was arrested Friday from a homicide in Orlando on July 29, according to the police department. Orlando Police said officers arrested shooting suspect Deon Sykes for the homicide at the 7-Eleven parking lot on the 5500 block of Orange Blossom Trail. Artevious Benton is accused of being an accomplice and was arrested on Wednesday, according to police. Investigators said he was arrested for his involvement in the shooting. Officers said they are still looking another suspect.

ORLANDO, Fla. The Orlando Police Department invited News 6 on Wednesday to see its most realistic, life-life training simulator ever. Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said the simulator tests training and teaches trainees how to control their emotions and adrenaline during "sensory overload." Rolon said OPD purchased the simulator in 2019 long before police protests broke out nationwide but the simulator is ensuring that officers use the right force in the right situation. "We're always looking for ways to modify the way we do business to better serve our citizens," Rolon said. He also invited anyone interested in seeing how Orlando police officers train - critics included - to come and test the simulator.

Police arrest 6 demonstrators around Universal Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. Officers arrested six demonstrators around Universal Orlando on Friday, according to the police department. Orlando Police said around 5 p.m. on Friday 25 protestors beging to demonstrate along streets around Universal Orlando. Investigators said polices started to block local traffic in order to protect the safety of the demonstrators. Police said some demonstrators started to set stuffed animals and pieces of cardboard on fire in the middle of several intersections. Investigators said after repeated requests to leave were ignored, some demonstrators refused to leave the area.

Arrest made in Cascade Oaks Drive homicide in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. An arrest has been made in the Cascade Oaks Drive homicide in Orange County, according to the Sheriffs Office. The Orange County Sheriffs Office said Alexander Martinez-Perez, 42, is facing a first-degree murder charge, attempted first-degree murder and burglary with battery. The Sheriffs Office said deputies responded to a home on the 8300 block of Cascade Oaks Drive on June 22 while deputies and Orlando Police were investigating a hit-and-run crash. The Sheriffs Office said officers with the Orlando Police responded to the home because a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash was registered to the address. On June 26, deputies identified the victim as Jon Payne, 68.

2 people arrested in Fairview Shores homicide

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. Two people have been arrested in the Fairview Shores homicide, according to Orlando Police. Kathryn Klein and Lakari Miller are facing charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and robbery with a firearm. Police said officers responded to the 1700 block of Fairview Shores Drive around 7 p.m. and found Alexander Dillon Hwang Jones with a gunshot wound. Investigators said Jones was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical and was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

According to police, the shooting occurred in a parking lot on International Drive early Saturday morning. Officers said that 26-year-old D’quan Prentice was taken to a hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound.
