According to Sligh’s family, he was heading to his first day at a new full-time job on Jan. 22, 2024, when Carrasquillo shot him in the 4800 block of East Colonial Drive. Sligh was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

According to an affidavit, Carrasquillo told police that Sligh cut in front of him and caused him to brake hard, flash his lights and honk his horn. Carrasquillo said that he opened his driver’s door to better hear something that Sligh was saying to him, what the affidavit states led to yelling between the two as the light turned green.

Carrasquillo then said he retrieved a gun from his glovebox, stood partially outside his vehicle, aimed the gun at Sligh’s vehicle and shot at the ground before firing several more times at the driver, telling police he just wanted to “maim” him, according to the affidavit. Police said six bullet casings were recovered from the scene, the affidavit states.

Carrasquillo told police that he grabbed his gun because he felt trapped, yet he never saw Sligh with a weapon, according to the affidavit.

“He acknowledged he could have driven around him but feared he would be followed. When asked if this would have happened if he never flashed his bright lights and honked his horn, he stated (Sligh’s) vehicle probably would have driven off,” the affidavit reads.

Carrasquillo initially faced a charge of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charges of second-degree murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle in February 2024 and was found guilty in March 2025, court records show.
