PALM BAY, Fla. – The suspect in a 2009 homicide was finally taken into custody on Wednesday morning, according to the Palm Bay Police Department.

In a release, police said that the death investigation originally kicked off after a “female victim” was fatally shot in front of her apartment as she returned home from work.

By 2013, a grand jury indicted a man named Luis Colon on charges of first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm, police explained.

But while a warrant was issued for his arrest, Colon remained at large for over a decade, the release states.

However, investigators were tipped off last week that Colon may have been residing in Puerto Rico, the police department announced. A follow-up investigation confirmed his whereabouts.

“Working alongside our partners in Puerto Rico, Colon was taken into custody without incident this morning,” the release reads. “He is currently awaiting extradition to Florida, where he will face the original charges.”

No additional information about the case has been provided at this time.
