MELBOURNE, Fla. – Brevard County has started work on its $56.6 million project to widen Ellis Road, according to a news release.

In the release issued on July 21, officials said that the work is scheduled to clear “vegetation, debris and other materials” within the right-of-way along Ellis Road from west of John Rodes Boulevard to west of Wickham Road in Melbourne.

Once the clearing is complete, which the county anticipates will be in early fall, there will be a nine-month window for utility relocation before the widening project begins, the release said.

The project has been in development for over two decades, and the county plans to start construction in late 2026, the release stated.

Officials said that in its current state, the corridor is “unable to accommodate travelers” and “poses safety risks.”
