SANFORD, Fla. – Work is underway to slow drivers down and make improvements for bikers and pedestrians in the stretch between Upsala Road and U.S. 17/92. News 6 drove through the area Thursday and noticed the speed limit from Persimmon Avenue to French Avenue is now 35 mph.
Sanford Police posted on social media warning drivers about the change. They say it was previously 40-45 mph there, and they want the public to be aware of their speed.
The post also has comments from people who noticed new traffic calming measures designed to encourage drivers to slow down.
“I don’t get why the road curves going towards the hospital, why couldn’t it be straight like it was before,” wrote one man.
Another person asked, “What is the purpose of the curbs that jut out please?” And another woman commented, “I feel like these improvements will cause more accidents and injuries. Almost got sideswiped last week by someone trying to avoid the new curbs that come out into the road.”
News 6 asked FDOT about the project and we were told the curvatures drivers have recognized are called “chicanes.” They’re designed to encourage slower driving speeds, along with protective barrier curbs. They also provide safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists sharing the roadway.
Drivers will notice buffered bicycle lanes and new midblock crossings already taking shape. When our News 6 crew drove through Thursday there were barricades blocking the new crossings until they’re finished.
Sanford Police wrote on Facebook that drivers will need to stop for anyone using those crossings when they are open.
One woman commented, “Thank you for making our cities more pedestrian/bike friendly!”
Drivers News 6 spoke to wanted to know when all of the orange barrels they’ve been seeing will go away and the project will be complete.
FDOT said to expect alternating single lane closures through Saturday, August 9th. Construction is estimated to be complete in early 2026.
