MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Melbourne Police Department said Tuesday that detectives continue to pursue active leads in a shooting that left a 2-year-old dead and two adults wounded.
The shooting happened Friday night inside a home on Poplar Lane in Melbourne.
Police said Bles’syn Lightner died in the shooting, which also injured a 54-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, both of whom remain hospitalized and are related to the child.
“Investigators have confirmed that the victims were shot inside the residence,” police said in a statement. “While specific details cannot be released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the scene has been thoroughly processed, and all available evidence is under review.”
At a news conference, Commander Shawn Eising said detectives are working the case around the clock.

“When you insert a 2-year-old child like Bles’syn Lightner, it summons an extra level of energy that takes them to that next level of trying to determine what happened, and they are physically, mentally affected by these things,” he said.
Eising didn’t tell Brevard County Community Correspondent James Sparvero if the shooter is known to the victims, or how many other people were at the house.
“We are not releasing that information as of right now,” Eising answered.
Police urged anyone with information about the case to contact the Melbourne Police Department at 321-608-6450 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
