Cocoa Beach party teacher wants off probation months after conviction

Karly Anderson seeks to overturn sentence

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The former Brevard County teacher who was arrested after an underage party at an elementary school principal’s house is fighting her sentence.

While Karly Anderson lost her job, she didn’t have to go to jail following her trial in May.

Anderson was sentenced to a year of probation, but now, the ex-teacher is going back to court hoping to overturn her sentence after just four months.

Anderson’s friend, former Roosevelt Elementary principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan, is still awaiting a trial date for the party at her house.

Someone who answered the door Monday at Anderson’s home told Brevard County Community Correspondent James Sparvero she didn’t want to talk.

Anderson’s attorney, Ken Weaver, called Sparvero and said she has satisfied all the terms of her probation, including community service hours and paying fines.

Other new court documents since her conviction show Anderson’s also trying to overturn making a $500 donation to the Children’s Advocacy Center.

The party may have involved minors, but a new motion reads Anderson’s resisting and disorderly convictions do not.

A grandparent at Roosevelt Elementary who preferred not to be named said Anderson should serve her sentence in its entirety.

“She should be on probation,” she said. “I think it just got really blown out of proportion, but, rightly so, they lost their jobs.”

Anderson’s due back in court on Sept. 24.

In addition to fighting probation, she’s also appealing her conviction.

There’s no trial set yet for the former principal, Hill-Brodigan.
